When it comes to Mexican food, it is quite difficult to talk about it without mentioning quesadillas. Even some people who aren’t too keen on Mexican food in general, love this dish. By the name itself, a Spanish word for “cheesy tortilla”, it is easy to picture. It is simply a folded wheat or corn tortilla, with melted cheese on the inside. There are an infinite number of possibilities in addition to cheese for creating wonderful quesadilla dishes.

In Mexico, where it originated, it is prepared the traditional way. A corn tortilla is filled with oaxaca cheese, and the tortilla is cooked until the cheese has sufficiently melted. In other parts of the world, quesadilla preparation has more similarities with the Mexican sincronizadas, another popular snack. In this style, the two wheat flour tortillas are stuffed with melting cheese like a sandwich, and it is cooked afterwards. Another way of quesadilla preparation is called the Monterey Jack. On a griddle, the corn tortilla is heated, flipped, and grated melting cheese is sprinkled on top. After the cheese melts, guacamole and shredded meat may or may not be added, and the tortilla is folded. In Guatemala the dish is also called a quesadilla but does not resemble the Mexican quesadilla in any way. It is actually sweet bread that is made up of dried cheese and rice flour. There is also a variety in Venezuela that is more similar to a gordita. An arepa is stuffed with various ingredients, and it comes out looking a lot like a quesadilla, except for the fact that it does not use a tortilla.

Quesadillas are popular as snack food as well as a main course because they are thin and not too filling.
